Above
the Clouds was one of the first homes built on the mountain
in the 1850's by the Fridiger family. Tho' the original
house burned to the ground, the fireplace chimney remained
standing, and another house was built on the same site.
In 1907, the Frazier family purchased the 120 acre ranch,
increasing it to 640 acres as well as increasing the size
of the house.
Your
hosts, Betty & Claude Ganaye, purchased the last 25
acres of the original home site in 1985, and completely
remodeled the house to create a bed & breakfast in
1993. The Ganayes received a Commendation Award from the
Historical Society of Sonoma for preserving a part of
local history, adding another chapter to a home that has
seen many travelers come and go.
When
the area was known as a getaway for San Franciscans, it
served as a hotel with tenting facilities, serving three
meals a day. (Sorry, we only serve breakfast, but you'll
love it!) In the early part of the century, there were
about 50 bars and many natural hot springs to draw visitors,
but after the Golden Gate Bridge was built, the area began
to undergo changes as tourists were able to travel farther
by car. The bars and hot springs began to close. Even
prohibition played its part in the history of the wine
country.
Jack
London Park is just across the valley; if you are interested
in one of America's renowned authors, a visit to his home,
the Wolf House, and museum will be a true thrill.
